About the Artist
Maria del Mar Moreno (b. Jerez, 1973) is a flamenco dancer from Jerez, a partisan of the traditional flamenco school, whilst being conscious of her time. The basics of her training were learnt from the great teacher Angelita Gómez, and she perfected her art with other masters such as Matilde Coral, Rafael el Negro and Mario Maya. She completed her education with studies in theatre, classical dance and piano.
As well as having a degree in Hispanic Philology from the Arts and Philosophy faculty in Cadiz, she is a highly successful businesswoman, and has also played a prominent role for many years on the main international stages, for example, as lead dancer for the company of Manuel Morao and the “Gitanos de Jerez” (Gypsies of Jerez), as guest artist for the guitarist Paco Cepero, as artistic partner of Antonio el Pipa, as guest artist playing the character of Destino (Destiny) in the show presented by the Villamarta Theatre of the Opera ‘Carmen’ (January 2006) and, of course, as head of her company. Her own productions have now been presented all over the world, for example ‘Momentitos de locura’ (Little moments of madness) (March 2001), ‘Septiembre’ (September) (February 2003) and ‘Dime que me quieres’ (Tell me that you love me) (October 2003). She has also been awarded the Copa Jerez (Jerez Cup), a prize granted by the Professorship of the Study of Flamenco Music and Dance in Jerez, and has a DVD on sale, ‘Maria del Mar Moreno. Jóvenes Maestros del Arte Flamenco’ and various CDs from the series ‘Sólo Compás’ (Only Compás).
As a teacher, she runs her own school in Jerez, of an itinerant style which has lead her classes to be known and taught across every continent. In addition to this, during her university career, she carried out diverse research works on the literature of oral tradition, and linguistic studies of the flamenco song language. She has also been a speaker and lecturer in the circles of the University Seminars of the Law Faculty of Jerez, in the Seminars of the Professorship of the Study of Flamenco Music and Dance in Jerez, in the Singing courses of the Peña (Flamenco club) "Tío José de Paula", in the courses for secondary teachers in the province of Cadiz given by the local government of Andalusia, in Adjaccio (Corsica), in the Institute of the Arab World in Paris...
She has also specialised in the knowledge and study of the French language. In recent years, she has created the show ‘Jerez Puro Esencia’, a ‘Riverdance’ of orthodox flamenco which premiered in the IX Festival of Jerez, 2005, and has received the Premio del Público al mejor espectáculo del Festival de Jerez (Spectators’ Prize for the Best Show in the Festival of Jerez).
